The academic year 2012-2013 ended well. There’ll be more to come in the academic year 2013-2014. All of our achievements of 2012–2013 were made possible by our hard work, the sweat and blood of our parents, teachers and the guidance of God. Our parents are our greatest treasures and carriers of traditions and cultures. They have gifted us with roots and wings. Blessed be God and our dearest parents!

The new Jesuit team at St. Xavier’s School Jawalakhel comprises of Fr. Mathew Assarikudy, S. J., Superior, Treasurer and Teacher, Fr. Marty Coyne, S. J., Counselor, Fr. David Ekka, S. J., Teacher, Bro. Augustus Ekka, S. J., Teacher, and me, Fr. Amrit Rai, S. J., Principal. It is my great privilege to be a part of St. Xavier’s School, Jawalakhel and serve you and your children.

Jesuit education is inspired by the vision drawn from the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who has been respected and admired by the world for over 2,000 years. This education is also based on the principles of Character Formation handed down by the Founder of the Society of Jesus – St. Ignatius of Loyola. This vision and these principles give Jesuit Educational institutions a specific character and set before their staff, students, and parents, high ideals of humanism and service towards towards which they are encouraged to continually strive. The aim of Jesuit education is to make the students ‘people for others’. It is heartening to see how the students are trying to be ‘people for others’ every day in small things.

The proximate educational aims are firstly, to develop all the powers of the body and soul. The formation of all aspects of a person is taken into consideration: body, senses, memory, imagination, intellect, and will. This aims at developing, disciplining, and directing all the capacities of the human personality. Secondly, education aims at promoting a positive transformation of the person in four areas – Social, Spiritual, Intellectual, and Personal – so as to be a good human being, truly Nepali, and contemporary.

Since last 62 years St. Xavier’s has been rendering its service to the people of Nepal. First of all, we are grateful to God for being our guide, inspiration and courage. We are grateful to scores of Jesuits from different parts of the world, both living and dead, hundreds of teachers and support staff, many of whom spent their whole life working with the Jesuit Fathers and thousands of parents who entrusted us with their children for their formation. Without the goodwill and cooperation of all these people St. Xavier’s School could not have reached to the stage where it stands today.

There is a certain typical thoroughness in all that is undertaken in Jesuit institutions. This is expressed by the frequent use of the word “MAGIS” which means not to be satisfied with the Status Quo, but always working towards a “greater” or “higher” degree of effectiveness with respect to fulfilling the goals that the Jesuits – as individuals and as a community- set for themselves. Their age-old maxim is to aim for the greater good of a greater number of people. The pursuit of excellence implies the fullest possible development of all the dimensions of the student’s personality – physical, intellectual, academic, affective, social cultural, moral, and spiritual. Therefore, in St. Xavier’s we are into this business of excellence.

St. Xavier’s School Jawalakhel is committed to quality education. Imparting a multi faceted education by developing the mental and physical potentials of students is our objective. Extra co-curricular activities go hand in hand with academic programmes. To better our extra co-curricular activities we felt a dire need of an indoor hall and we have begun the construction of an indoor hall. The estimated cost is one crore and fifty lakhs. The school is raising the fund through different activities. The parents, alumni/ae and friends of St. Xavier’s are generously contributing to the fund. We highly appreciate your magnanimous heart.

In a rapidly changing political, socio-economic situation of the people, Jesuit education is to address itself at aiming for greater effectiveness and relevance. It has to show a particular concern for the economically poor and socially marginalized. This pressing concern is reflected in the admission and appointment policies, as well as in the other educational programmes of the school. Jesuit education needs to face a challenging future with confidence and contribute significantly towards its creative and healing mission, if it is to be true to its particular Jesuit heritage, if the world view and faith vision of St. Ignatius of Loyola is to be activated and applied to education in ways adapted to the needs of today.
